Spain gives no chance for surprise and overwhelms Costa Rica in World Cup debut

Unlike Argentina and Germany, Spain did not give the zebra a chance in their debut in the Qatar Cup.

At the Al Thumama stadium, in Doha, the team that wears red and that has a world title (South Africa-2010) passed with great tranquility by Costa Rica, 7-0 (their biggest defeat in a World Cup), this Wednesday (23) and leads Group E.

The Spaniards have the same three points as Japan, only with a superior goal difference. The Japanese, in a new unexpected result in this World Cup, beat the Germans, by 2 to 1.

On Tuesday (22), Messi’s Argentina recorded one of the biggest embarrassments in its footballing history when it succumbed to Saudi Arabia, also 2-1, also on the comeback.

Technically far superior to the Costa Ricans, the Spaniards opened 3-0 in the first half, with goals from Olmo, Asensio and Ferran Torres (who is dating the daughter of coach Luis Enrique).

In the second stage, he extended with another goal from Ferran Torres, one from Gavi, the youngest of the team, aged 18, one from Carlos Soler and one from Morata.

With his goal, Gavi is only behind Pelé, who scored in Sweden-1958, and the Mexican Manuel Rosas, who scored in Uruguay-1930, on the list of the youngest to score a goal in the World Cup.

The Spanish midfield – made up of a trio from Barcelona that mixes the experience of Busquets, 34, and the youth of Pedri, 19, and Gavi– commanded the actions, with constant exchanges of passes.

Maintaining one of its characteristics over the last 15 years, Spain held the ball 71% of the time, according to FIFA statistics. Playing very little on the ball, Costa Rica was ineffective in the attack, so much so that they didn’t finish even once in the goal saved by Unai Simón.

Spain’s next challenge promises to be much tougher. On Sunday (27), he faces Germany, which, if he doesn’t win, will be close to elimination in the group stage for the second consecutive Cup.
