Canada scores fastest goal of 2022 World Cup

by

After missing a penalty in the opening of the World Cup, Canada hit the target quickly in their second match, against Croatia, this Sunday (27).

The clock had just passed the one-minute mark when Buchanan crossed from the right. Alphonso Davies went up to head in with power and score the goal with 1min07. The goal quickly surpassed that of Dutch striker Gakpo, who opened the scoring against Ecuador with 5min03 — the game ended 1-1.

Playing more advanced in the Canadian national team than he usually does in his club, Bayern Munich, Davies had been a negative highlight in his debut, against Belgium. On that occasion, despite the good Canadian game, the athlete missed a penalty, saved by Courtois, when the game was still 0-0 — in the second half, Belgium scored the only goal of the match.

However, this Sunday’s Davies goal is of historic significance for Canada as it was the country’s first in a World Cup. In 1986, in the only Canadian participation so far, the team lost its three games: 1-0 to France, 2-0 to Hungary and 2-0 to the Soviet Union.

Despite the speed in Davies’ goal, he doesn’t even come close to the World Cup record, which still belongs to Turkish Hakan Sukur, in 2002. The striker opened the scoring after 11 seconds against South Korea, in a 3-2 victory of the Turks.
