Brazil’s 1-0 defeat by Cameroon frustrated fans who gathered at Mineirão, in Belo Horizonte, to watch the match on big screens. There was a party atmosphere in the stadium, minimized by the result recorded in Lusail, Qatar.
According to the organizers of the event, called Arena Brahma BH, about 12,000 gathered on the lawn, protected by a fabric. And they were disappointed with the performance of the selection’s reserve team, which left the starters on rest for the round of 16 of the World Cup.
Stage of the most embarrassing defeat by Brazil in the history of the World Cup –the 7-1 to Germany, in the semifinals of 2014–, the Minas Gerais arena received excited fans. Some even celebrated with yellow cards for Cameroonian players.
In the second half, there was excitement with the scoring opportunities created by the yellow and green formation. But it was Aboubakar, from the African team, who settled the score, with a header in the 48th minute.
“It doesn’t change anything”, said student Henrique Santana, 20, trying to minimize the result, which did not remove Brazil from the leadership of Group G. “The feeling of optimism remains the same. Brazil will be champion this year.”
Many families took children to the stadium, hoping to experience the World Cup atmosphere with them. The organization of the event says that the proposal is precisely to spread the festive atmosphere of the competition.
With the defeat, part of the public let the field decide. The rest remained to accompany a program of concerts, which included a performance by country singer Gustavo Mioto.
