Moroccan players posed with the flag of Palestine on the lawn after qualifying for the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar, eliminating Spain this Tuesday (6), AFP journalists found out.
At the end of the game, the players gathered for a collective photo with the Palestinian flag, also shown by Valladolid defender Jawad el Jamiq, who entered the field with the piece after the game against Canada, on December 1st.
Palestinian colors are very present in the stands of this World Cup in Qatar, the first held in the Arab world. The presentation of the flag is a form of political protest over territorial disputes between Israel and Palestine.
In the game between France and Tunisia, a fan had entered the field during the match with that flag.
FIFA is hostile to gestures of a political nature in the competitions it organizes.
Eight European federations withdrew at the start of the tournament from wearing the “One Love” rainbow captain’s armband, intended to defend the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. According to some of them, FIFA had threatened with sporting sanctions.
