World Cup must go back to basics, says official on 2030 in South America

Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) considers Argentina’s victory in the Qatar Cup an important milestone in consolidating South America’s bid to organize the 2030 World Cup.

The United States, Mexico and Canada will host the 2026 edition, and Conmebol wants to organize the tournament on the centenary of the FIFA World Cups.

The idea is to promote the joint candidacy of Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile. The initiative originated between Uruguay and Argentina, and later Chile and Paraguay joined.

“In 2030 it will be 100 years since the first edition [no Uruguai]and the World Cup has to return to its origins”, said the Paraguayan Alejandro Domínguez, president of Conmebol. “We must honor the memory of those who bet on organizing a World Cup in South America for the first time.”

The head of Conmebol says he believes the occasion is about something that goes beyond the sport itself.

“This candidacy fills us with pride, because it teaches us to play as a team, and this was very well understood by the three countries that joined Uruguay, which is the symbolic nation for being the cradle of what we know today as the biggest football party. .”

The Uruguayan team, which had won two consecutive Olympic victories in 1924 and 1928, won its first world championship by beating Argentina 4-2 in the mythical Centenario stadium, in Montevideo, created for that Cup.

Argentina pockets US$ 10 million

Conmebol awarded the world champion Argentina with US$ 10 million (R$ 51.7 million) after the historic victory in Qatar, which meant the tenth world conquest of South America.

The entity had promised this award to the affiliated confederation whose selection won the World Cup, in this case, the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties on Sunday (18), after a thrilling 3-3 draw in 120 minutes.

Domínguez declared that “the Cup has come home, Argentina is a team that has fulfilled the dream of an entire continent. We are extremely proud of this team”.

Argentina added a new star to its jersey, after the 1978 and 1986 titles and the tenth for the continent, with the two conquests of Uruguay (1930 and 1950) and the five of Brazil (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002 ).
