The governor-elect of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), decided that a woman, military and black, will be the holder of the Secretary of Sports in his government.
Helena Reis, 52, who is a colonel in the Military Police and ran for state deputy in the 2022 elections for Tarcísio’s party, will lead the portfolio from 2023. The announcement should be made this Wednesday (21).
With 53,482 votes, the former head of the Military House of SP was unable to be elected, remaining as an alternate in the state Legislative Assembly.
She will be the second black woman on the governor-elect’s team, the first in the position of secretary. Earlier, Inês Coimbra was announced at the State Attorney General’s Office.
Born in São José do Rio Preto, in a profile on a social network Helena introduces herself to the public as “married and mother”, “Christian”, “PhD in political sciences”, “graduated in law and tourism”, “post-graduated in planning , implementation and management of education”.
Daughter of a military policeman and a street vendor, she points out that she was the first black woman to command the Casa Militar de SP (appointed in 2017 by the then governor Geraldo Alckmin), the first woman to head the CPI-5 (Command of Policing of the Interior in Rio Preto) and a student at the National Academy of the FBI (the American Federal Police).
Helena, who has been in the military since 1994 and a colonel since 2015, will wait for the share that will fall to her portfolio, within the budget of the São Paulo government for 2023 (total of R$ 317 billion).
Created in 1965, the Secretary of Sports of SP has as some of its duties the establishment of policies aimed at youth sport and leisure and the elaboration and execution of sports programs and projects at the state level.
