A day after Peru declared Mexican ambassador Pablo Monroy persona non grata, Lopez Obrador said Mexico would not cut ties.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said today he will not cut diplomatic ties with Peru, a day after Lima announced it was expelling Mexico’s ambassador over his country’s meddling in Peru’s internal affairs.
Lopez Obrador has repeatedly voiced his support for ousted Peruvian leader Pedro Castillo, angering Peru’s new government, and officials said Castillo’s family arrived in Mexico today seeking political asylum.
A day after Peru declared Mexican ambassador Pablo Monroy persona non grata, Lopez Obrador said Mexico would not cut ties.
“We are not going to deport anyone,” López Obrador told reporters.
The Mexican president again criticized Peru’s new government, questioning its legitimacy, and criticized US officials who met with Peru’s new president.
Earlier, a senior Mexican foreign ministry official, Martin Borrego, said he welcomed Castillo’s family to Mexico.
In a photo shared by Borrego on Twitter, the official greeted Castillo’s wife, Lilia Paredes, son and daughter. The family had taken refuge in the Mexican embassy in Peru.
López Obrador also said that “the door is open to Castillo, who has been remanded in custody for 18 months as he is investigated for ‘stance’ and ‘conspiracy.’
