Araucho: “I wouldn’t play for another Greek team except AEK”

by

Forever loyal to AEK states the Sergio Araujo. In an interview with “FOS”, the Argentinian forward and captain of “Enos” clarifies that he would not play for another team in Greece, although he reveals that after his first term there he had discussed with Olympiakos and PAOK. “Chino” declares that he is ready to sacrifice himself for the team function, he refers to the social responsibility that footballers have, while he declares that he is shocked by the atmosphere in the Opap Arena. In detail, the 30-year-old ace spoke about:

– the social responsibility of football players: “We all have a social responsibility. Footballers set the example. The 90 minutes I have a rivalry with another footballer stays on the pitch. The world should do the same.”

-AEK and the championship: “It’s a bit crazy to talk about the league from now on. We are behind in the standings and we have to respect the work done by Panathinaikos and their performance in the previous games. We continue our work and want to get as many points as possible. I want his team to win the championship, to be there when they do it again, I hope we can do it. I want to lift this trophy with a great friend of mine, my best friend I can say, Petros (Mandalos)”.

-the style played by AEK and Matias Almeida: “Our main characteristic is pressure and that’s what the coach asks of us. He wants pressure to… death and that is non-negotiable! Let’s get the ball quickly from the opponent! In this way we are given the possibility to have more of the ball and run less. He made it clear to us from the beginning. It definitely took some time to understand and adapt to the type of game he wants. However, I think he has already proven that he is a great coach and can give great things to this team. Matias approaches the footballer, shows him absolute trust. All he asks of us is to return the trust with the performance we will have. Personally I am grateful because from the beginning he showed me absolute trust, he showed me some things, he let me understand what he wants from me in the race. The only thing I’m missing at the moment is the goal, I hope to get it soon.”

-his own contribution to the team: “The word ‘self-sacrifice’ is something I do not negotiate. I like to sacrifice for the team, I like to run for my team-mates, I like to help them, to transmit this energy to them for the betterment of the team. This is non-negotiable. I like what the coach asks of me, I like helping the team.”

– the stadium in New Philadelphia: “The new stadium helps us a lot, the people of AEK had a huge thirst for the team to return to its home, it is shocking what we are living. People sing until the last minute.”

– his childhood: “My family got by just fine, but my parents always tried to give me the most they could. I am grateful to my parents for the principles they gave me. I think that there are financial problems in families that prevent helping children, taking them to and from training, buying them shoes. I played barefoot, but I didn’t care!”

– the communication he had with the parents of Aris’ deceased friend, Alki Kampanou: “From the first moment I heard that Alki’s parents were in the prize room, I really wanted to meet them. It’s a shame we couldn’t communicate the same language to tell them everything I wanted. It’s a shame, a shame what happened to their child.”

-if he would ever play in another Greek team and if there were contacts in the past: “I have received a lot of love from the people of AEK and I would not go to play for Olympiakos or Panathinaikos. I’ve thought about it a lot, it wouldn’t be right to do that. If I could not continue at AEK, I would prefer to return to Spain, to be close to my daughter. When I played the first semester at AEK, there were some discussions with Olympiakos and PAOK”.
