Unspeakable sadness prevails in the sports – and not only – community for the death of the 16-year-old boxer Vasilis Topalos.
The unlucky European champion was being treated by December 16 in serious condition, due to a blow to the head after a fainting episode, during training.
Today (January 2) he breathed his last, after a hard fight to keep himself alive.
The chronicle of the tragedy
Vassilis Topalos was training at a gym in Kallithea, where he participated in training matches. During the match he felt unwell and asked to visit the toilet, where fainted.
The boxer spotted him Alik Lagazasvili, who notified the 16-year-old’s father and the gym owner. EKAV was immediately called, who transported the unlucky athlete to the Tzanio Hospital.
The 16-year-old underwent head surgery to remove the hematoma and continued to is hospitalized in critical conditionuntil the New Year.
Condolence notice issued by the Hellenic Boxing Federation on the death of Vassilis Topalos, in which it states: “Gone” is our Golden Child, our smiling Santa, the born Champion with a heart of pure gold. Unspeakable sadness for the Hellenic Boxing family… Words cannot express what we feel, we are all devastated. Santa, you left us too soon. We will always remember you with love and nostalgia. Condolences to his family and loved ones. Let the soil that will cover you be light. You will forever be in our hearts».
Lefteris Avgenakis, who requested from the first moment the investigation of the case, wrote on social media: “The sports family of our country mourns the loss of the young boxing champion, Vasilis Topalos.
Many questions remain, but I am confident that the ongoing investigation will shed abundant light on every aspect of the unexplained circumstances of his fatal injury.
