by

This Tuesday (21) Brazilian jumper Ian Matos, aged 32, died. According to the Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA), he had been hospitalized since the beginning of November, when he had a throat infection.

The bacteria then passed into the esophagus and lungs. The athlete has evolved in recent weeks, but suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest in the last few hours and did not resist.

Ian was born in the interior of Pará, in the city of Muaná, and was at the Casa de Saúde São Bento, on Ilha do Governador (Rio de Janeiro). A kitty organized by friends and athletes in recent weeks raised funds to help the family pay the costs of traveling to the capital of Rio de Janeiro, to monitor their situation.

The athlete represented Brazil in diving in competitions such as the 2015 and 2017 World Aquatics World Cup, the 2016 World Cup, the 2010 and 2014 South American Games, the 2011, 2015 and 2019 Pan American Games and at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. He failed to qualify for the Tokyo Games.

In 2014, Ian declared himself homosexual, which, at the time, was an important milestone in the fight against prejudice within the sport.

“CBDA is in solidarity with the athlete’s family and friends and thanks them for their friendship, companionship and dedication to the sport,” stated the entity, in a statement.
