The state championships, which start throughout Brazil, mark the beginning of the season for major sporting events. In 2023, TV Globo regains much of the territory it had lost, especially during the most critical phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the case of the states, there is still some spraying. On open TV, the traditional Rio station has the rights to show Gaúcho, Mineiro and Pernambucano. Paulista and Carioca are, respectively, from Record and Band.

But Globo has again the possibility of broadcasting the Copa Libertadores. After almost three years, the valued South American club competition is in the company’s portfolio.

The broadcaster had terminated its contract with Conmebol (South American Football Confederation) in August 2020, pointing out that it had not reached an agreement with the confederation on the renegotiation of values due to the drop in revenues in the pandemic.

SBT entered the bidding dispute and took the remainder of the 2020 continental competition and the 2021 and 2022 tournaments – and reaped good results, with three Brazilian finals.

The case between Globo and Conmebol ended up in court, with the South American entity seeking compensation of US$ 120 million (R$ 629 million, at current prices). In October 2021, the parties reached an agreement, and Globo was able to re-enter the bid to acquire Libertadores broadcast rights.

They are in the group stage of the Palmeiras tournament, Corinthians, Flamengo, Fluminense, Internacional and Athletico Paranaense. Atlético Mineiro and Fortaleza will compete in the preliminary round.

On cable TV, the transmission of the competition will be with ESPN, which already has the main European championships (including English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese), in addition to the Argentine Championship. A good part of the international championships is already in activity since the turn of the year.

SBT, which lost Libertadores to Globo, takes the Copa Sudamericana in 2023. São Paulo, Santos, Red Bull Bragantino, América-MG, Botafogo and Goiás are guaranteed in the group stage of the competition.

Silvio Santos’ broadcaster also holds the rights to broadcast the Copa do Nordeste for the broadcasters that make up SBT Nordeste.

Record will keep broadcasting the Paulista Championship for 2023. The competition starts on January 15th.

In addition to the traditional broadcast on TV, the broadcaster will bet on the streaming format. PlayPlus and R7.com will broadcast the games narrated by veteran Silvio Luiz, 88, with the participation of Bola and Carioca, both ex-Pânico.

On cable TV, Premiere will broadcast the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul. The channel, which belongs to Globo, will also have games from the Copa do Brasil and the Brazilian Championship, competitions also on the menu of the Rio giant.

HBO Max and TNT are others that will show the Campeonato Paulista on the closed network. There will be 28 games, 12 exclusive. The two broadcasters still have the Champions League and will have the female Paulista.

For the second year in a row, the YouTube platform will broadcast the state of São Paulo for free. There are 16 matches in 2023.

YouTube has already been showing games from the Copa São Paulo for juniors, whose final traditionally takes place on January 25th. The platform shares coverage with SporTV and Rede Vida.

Women’s football will also be highlighted in 2023. Globo promises to invest in coverage of the World Cup, which takes place from July 20th, in Australia and New Zealand. All broadcaster platforms will be involved in the competition.

Globo and its SporTV channel will also pay attention to other women’s football competitions, such as Libertadores, Brasileiro and Supercopa.

Band, which already had football as its flagship and will have Carioca, is also betting on other sports. The broadcaster will broadcast Formula 1 for the third year in a row – the contract was renewed until 2025.

The news is up to the UFC. After years in the hands of Globo and the Combate channel, the famous MMA tournament will be shown on open TV from 2023. According to Band, the first event to be broadcast will be at the end of January.

The UFC will also have its own platform for broadcasting fights in 2023.
