They lost unbeaten, but Panathinaikos qualified for the quarterfinals

by

Volos and Panathinaikos drew without a score, in the second match between them after 2-1 of the first match for «16» of the Greek Cup, at the Panthessaliko Stadium today.

The “clover” was clearly superior in the overwhelming duration of the match, made and missed important opportunities, had goals that did not count for offside Veleth in 27 ‘, but also beam in an effort by Mauricio in the 84th minute.

The hosts did not manage to threaten, in fact, not once did Dioudis’s home, they were left with ten players due to Grillo’s dismissal in 80 ‘ and were eventually rightly excluded.

With Panathinaikos consequently getting the seventh “ticket” for quarterfinals in the second ranked domestic event, after Anagennisi Karditsa, PAOK, Panaitoliko, Olympiakos, Aris and Lamia, closing 2021 as … should.

In the… minds of coaches:

Volos lined up with the formation of 4-2-3-1, Kodnik at home and Barrientos, Grillo, Romero and Ferrari at the back. While Tsokanis and Bartolo were the “cutters”, with Regatin, Fernandes and Soares playing behind the only promoted Van Feert.

Panathinaikos on the other hand “came down” with four changes in relation to the match against PAS, system 4-3-3 and Dioudis under the goalposts. Kotsiras, Veleth, Senkefeld and Sanchez were the four in defense, while Ruben Pereth, Mauricio and Vigiafanies played on the axis. With Aitor and Hatzigiovannis fighting at the ends and Makenda at the top of the attack.

The match:

Panathinaikos entered the match furiously and, playing purposefully from the right, made two phases for goals before the five minutes were even completed.

However, Kodnik impressively repelled the very nice head of Vigiafanies – who already started the phase himself – from Kotsiras’s filling in 3 ‘!

While Mauricio’s head had the same end, from Aitor’s cross this time, in the next minute of the match…

The “greens” continued to have complete control, with Volos trying to “freeze” the rhythm and take measures on the field, lest they hold the ball for a while.

For his attack… no reason, of course, with Dioudis being a spectator and at the same time seeing Hatzigiovanis miss another great opportunity for 0-1, in the 20th minute, this time without the need for Kodnik to intervene!

Despite the high pressure of the opponent, Ivan Jovanovic’s team coped relatively comfortably, while at the same time scoring in the 27th minute, with Veleth’s header from a foul by Vigiafanies, but the goal did not count correctly for an offside by the Spanish defender…

Then, Panathinaikos started attacking from the left, while Hatzigiovanis’s individual energy in 37 ‘was good but marginally inaccurate, with the result that both teams went to the locker room tied without a score.

In the replay, Costas Bratsos placed Bartolo in the position of right back for the team of Magnesia, in order to close the “hole” he had there and at the same time threw Oroz early in the match instead of the “yellowed” Tsokanis, making it a little more aggressive.

At the same time, it started more decisively, at a time when the “clover” did not have the same possession of the ball, nor did it produce the same intensity.

Of course, even so, the final effort in his frames was not recorded by the opponent, at a time when he had another remarkable phase entering the final straight.

When, in the 70th minute, Aitor crossed from the right, Hatzigiovanis passed to Mauricio, but he made … chaf instead of shooting through the area!

Volos was left with ten players when Grillo overthrew Palacios, who had made a change a few minutes before, so as not to face Kodnik, in the 80 ‘and somewhere there … it’s all over.

This was followed by a saving operation by Ferrari and an awkward finish by Makenda within two minutes, while the best phase of Panathinaikos was recorded in the 84th minute, with Mauricio’s shot stopping at Kodnik!

With the guests making the easy difficult, but finally getting the qualification for the quarterfinals of the Cup.
