Opinion – Na Pinta do Surfe: World Surfing 2023 starts this month.

by

From the 29th of January to the 10th of February in Pipeline – Hawaii the first stage of the world surfing championship will take place, there is great expectation for the start of the circuit of dreams.

I was happy with the composition of the Brazilian team for this season. Michael Rodrigues, João Chianca and three-time champion Gabriel Medina are back. Gabriel returns after an injury and has already shown that he is 100% recovered by recently winning the Challenger in Saquarema. Gabriel has been posting some workouts on his social networks and in one post he wrote: back with a single focus. Filipe Toledo current world champion and Ítalo Ferreira also world champion in 2019 put a lot of weight on this team. Samuel Pupo and his brother Miguel Pupo are sure to be a tough match for any opponent. Caio Ibelli, Yago Dora and Jadson André complete the men’s team and we can believe that they will also have a good year of competition.

Tatiana Weston-Webb will again be our female representative. She has been improving her surfing every year and is ripe to try for the unprecedented title for Brazil this year.

How awesome! What a level of surfing we were able to reach and it will be difficult to beat the Brazilians.

I see the Australian Jack Robinson, the American Griffin Colapinto and the Hawaiian John John Florence as the main rivals. Jack is young and very good, he has powerful surfing, innovative maneuvers and this year he will have the responsibility of winning a title for Australia after many years. Griffin is also young, has a radical and polished surfing, excellent competitor. John John is a two-time world champion, he is a natural talent. He surfs with style, power and it’s really different to see him surfing, he makes it look easy. John John is coming back from injury too, one more in his career, if he’s 100% he will undoubtedly be a tough opponent.

It will undoubtedly be a very competitive and exciting year to follow. Here in Brazil, surfing is becoming popular day after day and the number of practitioners of all ages keeps growing. Children start in the sport already demonstrating skills, this is the result of the reference they have through Brazilian surfers who have reached a very high level in the sport. It is curious and rewarding to see children having new idols of new sports, this lesson is for everyone, the example drags.

May we have an incredible year and may our athletes continue to pass on this image that surfing is a healthy sport, that competing is optional and that no one is anyone’s enemy.

I’m sure this year will be a surfing show and maybe the best and most competitive year we’ve ever had.

Place your bets and let’s cheer for our team to bring the seventh world championship.

aloha
