Daniel Alves plays football in prison and awaits appeal for freedom

by

Brazilian player Daniel Alves, 39, played his first football game in prison last Thursday (26).

Accused of rape by a 23-year-old girl in the bathroom of a nightclub on December 31, he has been imprisoned for ten days in the Brians penitentiary center, in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Spain.

According to a report by the Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia, the anticipation was so great to see Alves play that the news quickly spread throughout the prison. Employees, external professionals, management personnel and all the inmates of the neighboring module discreetly lurked, glued to a glass so as not to miss details.

Afterwards, the prison decided to place a blind cloth between the two modules so that the player’s neighbors can return to their normal activities.

The newspaper also published statements by the Brazilian, which he credited to “multiple sources, official and unofficial, inside and outside the Brians 2 prison, among which there are also relatives of inmates who share prison with Dani Alves.

According to the newspaper, Alves said as soon as he arrived at the detention that “the player was left out, and the Dani who is here is just one more”.

Calm and reserved, he would have said: “I’ll take whatever comes my way. I left home when I was only 15 years old. I’ve overcome very difficult and complicated situations in my life. This will be one more that will pass. Nothing scares me”.

He has also been talking about what happened in the bathroom at the Sutton nightclub and ensuring that the relationship was consensual.

The expectation is that still this Monday (30) the lawyer Cristóbal Martell Pérez-Alcalde will present to Justice the appeal so that the player can remain free during the investigations of the Spanish police.

Pérez-Alcalde has already written the appeal and believes his client can avoid prison. To that end, he will propose precautionary measures to ensure that Alves does not flee, such as the use of an electronic bracelet, handing over his passport and, perhaps, a high bail.
