Opinion – In the Race: Study points to benefits of non-alcoholic beer for athletes

by

Those who attend street competitions must have already noticed the growing presence of beer brands in the list of event sponsors. Michelob Ultra, for example, was present at the Rio and Florianopolis marathons in 2022.

And beer matches physical activity? Yes and no.

The “no” is easy to explain. Alcohol has a deleterious effect on the athlete. It lowers blood sugar levels, accelerates dehydration and favors the accumulation of lactic acid, which leads to cramps and loss of performance. The effects are enhanced when consumption is exaggerated. In short: don’t decorate.

On the other hand, according to research published in December, non-alcoholic beer is healthier than its traditional version and even than some isotonic drinks available on the market.

According to Maria Portillo, an affiliated researcher at the Center for Biomedical Research at the Carlos III Institute and the University of the Basque Country, in Spain, those responsible for the positive effects of non-alcoholic beer are the polyphenols, bioactive compounds present in hops – a plant that is used in the manufacture of hops. of the drink and which gives bitterness, aroma and flavor. These compounds have an anti-inflammatory effect, and help with muscle recovery after physical activity. Although they are also present in traditional beers, the positive effects of polyphenols are partially neutralized by the presence of alcohol.

Portillo’s research reviewed available data from other studies conducted over the past decade, with an emphasis on the drink’s positive impact on the cardiovascular system. “The polyphenols present in beer have interesting antioxidant effects, in addition to anti-inflammatory benefits”, said the researcher in an interview with the Washington Post.

The study also indicates benefits of beer with alcohol in reducing cholesterol — something that was not evident in non-alcoholic versions. But the researchers recommend that the benefit be obtained from the consumption of foods considered healthy such as fish and olive oil.

So can you swap water for non-alcoholic beer? It’s not like that. The drink is not the best option to be ingested before or during the race. Because it is carbonated, it can cause discomfort, heartburn, gas and discomfort during the test. Therefore, its consumption is indicated preferably after physical activity, for hydration and energy replacement.
