Athens Kallithea announce the signing of Spanish midfielder Javier Matilla on a free transfer following the termination of his contract with Super League 1 side Volos by mutual consent. Matilla, 35, has signed until the end of the 2022/23 season with an option to renew for the season 2023/24.
During his 15-year career, the former Villarreal, Real Betis and Aris midfielder has made 161 appearances in Spain’s top two divisions, 131 appearances in Greece’s top division, and 16 appearances in UEFA competitions.
Born in Toledo, Matilla rose through Villareal’s academy, making his first-team debut at the age of 20, making 14 total appearances in the Primera Division and seven in total in the UEFA Europa League over three seasons.
In June 2011, Matilla signed for Real Betis, where he made a total of 37 appearances in two seasons in the Primera Division and 15 appearances in one season in the Segunda Division along with two appearances in the UEFA Europa League. During a loan spell, Matilla scored 12 goals with four assists, helping Real Murcia avoid relegation to the Segunda Division.
After two more seasons in Spain with Elche and Gimnastic Tarragona, Matilla left his homeland for Greece, signing for Aris where he quickly became a mainstay in the team.
Over the course of four seasons from 2018/19 to 2021/22, Matilla made 118 appearances in total with seven goals and nine assists, contributing to Aris’ historic run in Super League 1 as they finished fifth over two seasons and third position for the next two seasons. Finishing third for two consecutive seasons was Aris’ best league performance since the 1979/80 season. In his time with Aris, Matilla made a total of seven appearances in UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League qualifiers.
After joining Super League 1 side Volos last summer, Matilla has made 13 league appearances in the current 2022/23 campaign, with Volos currently sitting sixth in the table.
