AEK played as long as it took and defeated Thetida 3-1 in Voula in the third time quarter-final of the Women’s Volleyball Cup and qualified for F4 of the competition, after an absence of four whole years.
Thetis was superior in service (10-3 aces) and blocks (13-9), but fell short on offense with a 28% efficiency (31/112 completions), in contrast to the Black and Yellows, who had 45% with 59/131 finished attacks.
In the first set, Thetida’s 7-3 became 7-7, with the two teams going point-for-point until 16-16. With Nizetich and Silva, AEK reached 19-16 and Calderon’s block made it 18-25.
In the second set, Thetis took a 16-6 lead and, despite AEK’s attempt to cut back, the Voula team equalized at 25-20.
In the third set, 10-10 became 10-14 and 15-20 with Silva, with Calderon making it 17-25.
Thetis came in determined to send the game to a tiebreak, started better in the fourth set and took an 8-4 lead. With pressure on the serve and correct choices in the attack, AEK managed to tie the game at 11-11 and take control. Silva made it 20-24 and Kulikova blocked 20-25.
