He left Bruges with a “double”… Benfica qualified!

With Odysseus Vlachodemos as consistent as needed and Joao Mario-Neres finding their way to the net, the Benfica almost “cleared” the case of qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Champions League, after taking a huge victory in its home Club Brugge (0-2)!

The Portuguese, after overcoming the initial pressing of the Belgians in the first 20′, dominated the match, while even when the hosts tried to threaten, it was almost in vain. In the replay on March 3 in Lisbon, the “eagles” just have to… manage.

The match

The first good moment was for Bruges, with Vlachodimos making an excellent intervention in his closed corner in the 5th minute on a strong shot by Buchanan. From the 20th minute onwards, Benfica completely dominated. In the 26th minute, he almost scored an own goal from counterattacks in favor of the Portuguese, while in the next phase, Otamendi made a header-pass, but Antonio Silva cannot find the target from close range with his own header! In the 30th minute and after a combination in a foul, a ball came to the back of the defense, a shot in motion by Rafa Silva and finally a post! Mignolet was winning, Benfica was losing and they almost celebrated. Specifically, after a foul, Doi caught the header, sent the ball into the net, but the goal was canceled for completely offside!

It wasn’t until the 46th minute that Benfiac missed a huge opportunity to open the scoring, when after a foul, Ramos found the ball in front of the goal but missed! In the 49th minute, Hendry found the foot of Gonzalo Ramos in the 49th minute, the referee correctly awarded a penalty, which was taken by Joao Mario. The Portuguese shot powerfully high into the goal, Mignolet found it but it ended up on the post and in! For several minutes Brugge tried to create without even threatening though. So in the 88th minute, after a tragic mistake in Meyer’s defense, Neres got in between, stole the ball and beat Mignolet in a 4-on-4! In fact, at 90+3′, the same player scored again, but there was clearly offside and his goal was correctly disallowed.
