Opinion – Tostão: There are several young Brazilian coaches that should be used more

In Minas Gerais, Atlético and Cruzeiro are without a coach. Cuca didn’t want to stay, and Luxemburgo was fired, along with the coaching staff, because of the high costs for a team from Serie B. In addition, Luxembourg’s average (58%) was good, but not enough for Cruzeiro return to Serie A. I also didn’t see, at any time, a great collective performance of the team that raised high hopes.

It will be difficult for Cruzeiro to hire a good, cheap, studious coach with a chance to evolve with the team, preferably young, although there are some more experienced coaches with modern ideas. What should not be brought in is outdated trainers, just repeaters of what once worked. Football and the world have changed.

Cruzeiro needs to look carefully at the youth categories. Unlike other Brazilian clubs, such as Fluminense, Santos, Palmeiras and Flamengo, Cruzeiro, for a long time, does not train players of great national prominence, to improve the team and/or to be traded for huge amounts.

Atlético continues negotiating with Jorge Jesus. Values, they say, are astronomical. We may have, in February, for the Supercopa, Atlético and Flamengo, directed by two Portuguese coaches, Jorge Jesus and Paulo Sousa. If Flamengo wins, Jorge Jesus will be exorcised. If you lose, the crimson-black fans, as Nelson Rodrigues would say, will cry tears from squirting on the sidewalk. If Rooster loses, Atleticans will say that Cuca is really good.

Paulo Sousa paid the termination fine, broke his contract with the Polish federation and was hired by Flamengo. The Poles call him a traitor, deserter and irresponsible and threaten to denounce Flamengo to FIFA for harassing a hired professional.

The clever philosopher Luxemburg has said, several times, that contracts exist to be broken, as long as the contractual rules are respected. In all activities, professionals change their jobs. It’s cool, but at times it’s unethical, like leaving a national team when deciding on a dream spot in the World Cup.

In Brazil, a country where corruption is tolerated, unethical attitudes are ignored, even praised, for their professional cleverness.

We may have three Portuguese coaches in the three main Brazilian teams, Atlético, Flamengo and Palmeiras. Comparisons and statistics have already started, out of time and inadequate, without taking into account numerous important factors, such as the quality of the casts, working hours, performance, the fascination of the teams and so many other scheduled or occasional reasons. These details often occur in other comparisons.

Inter also hired a foreign coach, the Uruguayan “Cacique” Medina. Is it a fad or are foreign technicians coming to fill the lack of quality of Brazilian technicians? I don’t think it’s either. Good coaches from abroad are welcome, as they help in the evolution of our football, but there are several young Brazilian coaches who are very well prepared, with chances to evolve and who should be used more.

Science is fundamental, the basis for the evolution of football and life. However, knowledge is not just that, it goes beyond strategies, information and statistics. We need to see what is not clear. “Things have no explanation, they exist” (Fernando Pessoa). Poets should not be read literally.
