Idol of the Catalan team, the ex-wheel signed a contract for three seasons (including the current one) shortly after arranging his departure from Al-Sadd, from Qatar.
At the club in Catalonia, Xavi takes the place that belonged to Ronald Koeman, 58, another idol of the team as an athlete, but who could not resist the poor performance of the season. It will be Xavi’s second job as a coach. He started his career on the edge of the field in 2019, with the Qatar team, for which he won seven titles, including two Qatar Cups and a local league title.
Trained in the youth categories of Barcelona, he won 25 official titles wearing the team shirt, including eight cups in the Spanish Championship, four in the Champions League, two in the Club World Cup and three in the Copa del Rey.
Xavi was part of one of the most winning periods in the club’s history. He was an important player in teams that had Ronaldinho Gaúcho and Lionel Messi as great stars. In all, he played 767 official matches and scored 86 goals.
In 2015, the then midfielder left Camp Nou to play for Al-Sadd, where he stayed until he retired in 2019 and became a coach.
In a statement, the Qatar team said it accepted the termination of the coach’s contract after paying a fine and to strengthen relations with the Catalans. “We agreed to cooperate with Barcelona in the future.”
The farewell of the idol, six times voted the best in the world, was the biggest reflection of the difficulties the club is going through for having to deal with a debt of more than 1 billion euros (R$ 6.3 billion).
