Table Tennis: Competitive activity in three cities

by

The matches for the A1 and A2 national category, in men and women, stand out this weekend, 11 and 12 March 2023, in the indoor activity of table tennis.

First of all, the last three matches in the A2 women’s championship will take place in the federal hall of the Peace and Friendship Stadium.

In the same place, but also in Alexandroupolis, this year’s A2 men’s championship will also end. In SEF and in Thessaloniki, the matches of A1 would also be completed, but the final will be extended after the postponement of the Olympiakos matches. Thus, in the men’s A1, the remaining matches for the 16th, 17th and 18th matches will be held at SEF, as well as one postponing match, while in the women’s A1 the remaining matches of the last three matches will take place at the Faleri stadium and in the gymnasium of HANTH.

E.F.O.E.P.A. will have a live match broadcast from every hour through its channel at youtube. The Technical Committee of the federation, as we have noted since yesterday, will look for new dates for holding the total of six postponed Olympic games (from three for men and women) that will also decide the titles. The program also includes matches for the following inter-club categories.

In the men’s A1, the “battle” for the first place does not… flare up this two days since the derby between the leader Olympiakos and the 2nd ranked Panathinaikos is among the games, which were postponed, so the attention goes mainly to the play-off positions. Tataula will chase their last chances for direct stay and their match tomorrow (11/03) against 5th AEK is interesting. The 8th ranked Ifitos Patrons is playing its last card to avoid direct relegation, but given that it is not in its favor even a possible tie with the 7th GAS Elefsis it is extremely difficult to turn the situation around.

In the women’s A1, four teams will be in the gymnasium of HANTH and three in the Stadium of Peace and Friendship. For Olympiakos, which is not competing now, the formal validation for the title remains. Behind him, Sarises Florina have a big advantage to secure 2nd place and want to end their positive course with three more victories in Thessaloniki. In the low ranking levels, Ethnikis Alexandroupolis remains at the bottom and is relegated, while HANTH goes to the playoffs. Logically, Aris 2006 will follow CHANTH in claiming to stay in A1, just mathematically they are still hoping and on Sunday they face 5th AEK in the co-capital.

In the men’s A2 half of the teams will be at the SEF and the rest at the closed warm-up of KGE Maistro in Alexandroupoli (Aristotelous 10). In Athens, the title and direct promotion to the A1 category is decided. OEA Thessaloniki, which is leading undefeated and is the favorite, faces Aris Nikias, which is 1 point behind it. The match between them takes place on Sunday at 16:00.

For positions 2-3 of the promotion barrage, Finikas Agia Sophia Piraeus has a serious advantage. It is 1 point above 4th Athina Maggoufanas and as 4 teams are relegated this year there is also the following peculiarity: Athina, who theoretically can go to the play-offs in the final, is at the same time in danger of being relegated because it is 1 point away from AO Pefkis and the dangerous zone.

In A2 women, the 12th, 13th and 14th matches will be held in Athens. The pioneer GAO Piraeus is expected to formally close the title case. DAO Tavrou and ASEA Kavala definitely cover the 2-3 positions for the promotion playoffs. In the “tail” tomorrow’s match (18:00) of the 6th AE Athena, which is currently “saved”, with the 7th Phoenikes Patras, who are now in relegation positions, is important. The tail of Telamon of Salamis is almost unlikely to turn the tables.
