The NBA and the Players Association reached a full agreement to sign a seven-year collective bargaining agreement through 2030. The deal, which remains to be formally ratified by the owners and athletes, includes some significant changes.
-establishment of a second salary cap, 17.5 million dollars, for the teams that exceed the first. If that clause had been in place last summer, transfers like Di Vincenzo to the Warriors, Ingles to the Bucks, Gallinari to the Celtics and Wall to the Clippers could not have happened.
-establishing a minimum participation in 65 games for players who win awards in the seasons or are elected in the best five.
-establishment of a mid-season tournament, in the form of… Cup, even from the next season (2023/24). The games will initially be on the regular-season schedule in November, followed by an eight-team knockout tournament in December, followed by a neutral-site Final 4 with Las Vegas bidding. The matches of the tournament will count towards the final standings, so the two teams that reach the final will play 83 games. Players and coaches who win the tournament will pocket additional money, about $500,000 each.
-increasing the upper contract extension limit from 120% to 140% of the previous contract. So, for example, Jaylen Brown from the $165 million four-year extension he could sign with the Celtics, can now sign for $189 million.
-increasing the places for two-way contracts in the teams from two to three. It rewards players who, despite not being drafted, stood out in a different way and earned a way into the NBA, such as Alex Caruso, Austin Reeves, Duncan Robinson, Max Struss and others.
