Giannis: “I deserved to be MVP for the last five years, I’m not going to sit and complain about an award”

With the NBA regular season just around the corner, talk of the MVP award has heated up.

In it, he also participates John Antetokounmpo, who had an outstanding season and led the Bucks to first place in the East. The Greek star spoke to Bleacher Report, emphasizing that he would like his third personal MVP, but his priority is to win another championship with the Bucks.

In detail what he said:

“I’m never going to try to create a narrative about the work I’ve done and maybe that hurts me because I think for the last five years I’ve been the MVP. Do I want a third MVP? Of course yes, I want a third. I am extremely competitive. I try to make my team successful. That’s what I get paid for. That’s why I’m here. I’m never going to be someone who denigrates someone else’s work. It doesn’t represent who I am as a person. And I will never beg for an MVP award that I think I deserve. I am very proud to be able to play at MVP level because it means I make my team very successful. That’s the goal.

Two of the MVPs I’ve won in the last five years, those were my two worst seasons in that span. Go look at the stats… But it doesn’t even matter. I tried to avoid this discussion at all costs. I never want to create a narrative and have my children watch their father whinge about an award because, at the end of the day, it’s all part of the story. I don’t want to win this way.

Maybe people are tired of me. And look, I’ll bore myself too. I’m not going to lie. Mariah, my beloved, is already tired of me. But at the end of the day, I’m going to try to be consistent, I’m going to try to be as dominant as I can and I’m going to try to help my team be successful for as many years as I can and as many years as my legs allow me to be. Eventually, everyone’s going to think “Man, give this guy that MVP, because damn, he’s still here.” It will be done.

I am extremely blessed to have two MVPs. I could come up with a lot of facts and figures to understand why I feel like people discredit my game, but I’m here to win a championship and that goal will never change. I will never try to create a narrative. No, that’s not me. I truly believe from the bottom of my heart that I will eventually get another MVP. Until then, I’m trying to get that second ring.”
