The Madrid team returned to success eight games later beating Osasuna 2-1 at home and caught Athletic Bilbao in 7th place in the La Liga standings, thus staying alive for Europe.
An improbable own goal from Aridan in the 40th minute put Rayo in front, with Palathon capitalizing on the visitors’ defensive mistakes to make it 2-0 with a terrific strike three minutes later.
An excellent shot from outside the area by Moi Gomet in the 66th minute put the Basques back in the game, but they had no answer and dropped to 9th place.
