Statements ahead of today’s (4/30, 6:30 p.m.) match Tottenham with Liverpool he did on “Sky Sports”. Harry Kanemaking a small account of the failed season for “Spurs”.
The Tottenham captain emphasized that the team has lost some of the values and culture which had the period when Maurizio Pochettino was in technical leadership, while he emphasized the need for immediate recovery.
What the Tottenham captain said in detail:
“It was difficult. Before every season you have goals as a team and you aim to achieve things, to win things and during the season we had some good moments. We’ve had some great results, but we just haven’t found the consistency you need to be at the highest level.
It was difficult for a lot of reasons, there were a lot of changes and as a player you try and adapt and try to deal with those situations, but it wasn’t easy. If we can end this season on a bit of a positive note, it will go into July and pre-season where we can start again.”.
On how the team can improve: “These are discussions that have to be done towards the end of the season. I feel we have lost a bit of the values at this club in recent years. We have to find a way to get back on the same page again and obviously even with the fans.
When you’ve been here for so long, I’ve been here since I was 11 years old, you understand what the fans are like, you understand what the club is like. I’ve had good times with the club, I’ve had not so good times.
The values are… everybody wants to win and everybody wants to lift trophies and that’s ultimately our goal every year. But we are in a different situation to some of the clubs around us and we have to accept that but find a way to improve and get better.
We probably haven’t done that in recent years, so ultimately it’s about getting back to racing right at the top and our team has enough talent to do that.”.
On Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure and if he remembers it: “Yes, I think we had three or four very good years when we were competing at the top and that was without spending a lot of money.
We had a very good mix of new and experienced players. It’s impossible in football to click and go back to the good times and say ‘let’s go back to the way it was’, because every season and every situation is different. But I feel like there were some values at that time and a culture that really made us achieve the things that we did.
So maybe we’ve lost parts of that over the last few years and we have to look back at it and see the good things we can take and try to apply that going forward.”.
