The PPC Cycling Tour of Greece 2023 concludes today, Saturday, May 6, with the 4th and final stage (133.5 km & 1,089m of elevation gain), which will once again start from the enchanting Navarino Dunes of Costa Navarino, this time but with a different direction and termination in Ancient Olympia.
The start will be given at 9:30 in the morning and immediately the group of cyclists will move north-east, inland, to reach first Chora and then the first climb of the day, Trifilias Tower.
There it will change direction, to the west, pass by Gargaliani and return to the shores of the Ionian, in Marathopolis.
Afterwards, the athletes will continue their journey northwards, along the Cypriot Gulf, successively passing Filiatra (where a special surprise awaits the French Legendre team!), Kyparissia, Zacharo and Caiaphas Lake .
The southern outskirts of Pyrgos will follow and shortly after, the finish in Ancient Olympia, one of the most important archaeological sites not only in Greece, but in the entire world.
In the holy land that gave birth to the Olympic Games, the curtain will fall on the PPC Cycling Tour, probably on another mass sprint.
For one more day, the route will have historical references as well as tourist suggestions, since it will pass by the Mycenaean palace of the Homeric Nestor on the hill of Egliano, it will reach Gargalianos with the panoramic view of the vast olive grove of the Messinian plain, Marathopolis and the First Island with its ruins from the Peloponnesian War and the ancient inscriptions, it will enter Ilia and, leaving the lake of Caiaphas behind, it will head towards Pyrgos, where it will change course, this time to the east, on its northern shore river Alpheios and the Kronio hill, in Ancient Olympia, where in 776 BC. the first Olympic Games were held there, where every two years the Olympic flame is touched in a modest, evocative, Doric ceremony, before traveling to the respective host city.
