They were barely trying to hide their broad smiles at the looming title win the Petros Mandalos and George Athanasiadisafter the AEK’s victory over Aris (1-2). The international midfielder, in fact, invited Sergio Araujo to return from Spain, where he is recuperating, to lift the champion’s trophy as captain on Sunday.
Their statements in detail in “Hour of Champions”:
For Sergio Araujo’s speech:
A.M: “A quote from Araujo comes to mind. When you hunt there is not so much pain. At the right moment he will pass first. At the right time this happened. There is one game left to be crowned champions.”
For last year’s game that left AEK out of Europe and this year’s match that gave the championship:
GA: “It was difficult for me. I came back, started playing and gave my best to help the team. I believe I succeeded.”
A.M: “We are talking about two games with different emotions. Then we left with our heads down. Today we leave with a smile on our faces”
For AEK’s new stadium, the OPAP Arena:
A.M: “Seeing the results is an important factor on the pitch, apart from the players and the coaches. The stadium is beautiful, this is seen by every sports fan throughout Greece. I’m looking forward to next Sunday.”
GA: “It is important that we have our own castle. I remember in the game with Levadeiakos, I shuddered.”
For Matias Almeidas:
A.M: “He managed to tie a whole. He made changes in positions and it may have seemed strange at first, but the results are here.”
GA: “When you’re a family, anything can happen.”
For all the years at AEK:
A.M: “Last year was the height of failure. When you’re in one of the big four and you don’t win titles it’s strange. It definitely affected me. I know my potential, I knew that AEK will be at the top in the coming years.”
For the most supportive person:
GA: “My wife supports me above all.”
For who will lift the cup:
A.M: “Sergio has to be here, get his legs and come. The cup will not be lifted by me, but by Sergio, Steven, Damian and the kid from here.”
