Djokovic admits he broke quarantine after positive PCR: “My judgment was wrong”

by

Clarifications regarding what is heard about his movements after the positive coronavirus test were given by Novak Djokovic.

In a lengthy written statement posted on social media, the Serbian tennis player claimed that he did not know he was ill when he was at the event in Belgrade, but admitted that he knew it when gave a scheduled interview in Equipe. In fact, he stressed that he could have postponed it.

In addition, he referred to bureaucratic error upon his arrival in Australia and stressed his willingness to compete in the Australian Open, writing the best about the event and its world.

In detail, what he wrote:

“I would like to highlight a constant misinformation about my activities and attendance at events in December, after the positive PCR test.

It is misinformation that needs to be corrected, for to alleviate anxiety about my presence in Australia and clarify facts that hurt and worry my family.

I want to emphasize that I tried very hard to ensure the safety of everyone and to comply with my obligations.

I was present at a basketball game in Belgrade on December 14, where various people were found positive. Although I had no symptoms of coronavirus, I did a rapid test on December 16 which was negative and, being cautious, I did an official and approved PCR test on the same day.

The next day I attended a tennis event in Belgrade to give prizes to children. Before I go I did a rapid test that came out negative.

I had no symptoms and felt good, I had not received the update for a positive PCR test until the event is over.

The next day, December 18, I was at the sports center in Belgrade for an obligation I had, regarding an interview and photo shoot for Equipe. I canceled everything I had to do in addition to this interview.

I felt obliged to proceed with this interview, as I did not want to “hang” the journalist, but I kept a safe distance and wore a mask all the time, except for the photo shoot.

When I went home after the interview I was isolated for the time it took. My judgment was wrong and I accept that I could postpone the obligation.

As for my travel statement, it was completed by my team on my behalf, as instructed by the Authorities upon my arrival.

My agent sincerely apologizes for that bureaucratic error to fill in the wrong box for my previous trips before Australia. It was a human error and there was certainly no expediency. We live in difficult times with the pandemic and sometimes such mistakes can happen. Today my team provided additional information to the Australian Government to clarify the matter.

Although I felt it was important to clarify the misinformation, I will not comment further, out of respect for the Government of Australia and its Authorities.

Is always honor and privilege to play in the Australian open. It’s a tournament loved by players, fans and the community, not just in Victoria and Australia, but around the world. I want to have the opportunity to fight against the best players in the world, in front of one of the best audiences in the world “.
