Six people, including three minors, were shot dead during a soccer match organized by a family in a park in Hidalgo state, central Mexico, local authorities said.
The shootings took place Sunday afternoon in a residential area of the city of Atotonilco de Tula, the attorney general’s office said in a statement.
“There was an armed attack on the football stadium, where a family sports meeting was taking place, with a report of six dead, including three children, while there are also two injured”, the announcement states, clarifying that an investigation is already underway to identify of the perpetrators.
According to eyewitnesses, several armed and possibly drunk men opened fire on the crowd, causing general panic, before fleeing. Two people were killed instantly and four others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Several criminal gangs, which commit theft and fuel trafficking, operate in the state of Hidalgo, located almost 100 kilometers from the capital of Mexico.
