Manchester City and Real Madrid have met nine times in the top club competition, with the pre-history auguring for a big derby. Three wins, three draws and three losses are the results for the two teams, after the first semi-final which ended in a draw with a score of 1-1.
The first time the two teams met in the Champions League was in the 2012-13 season for the groups of the competition. There at the Bernabeu, the “queen” won 3-2 thanks to goals from Marcelo, Benzema and Ronaldo, with Kolarov and Dzeko scoring for the “citizens”. At the Etihad, the match ended in a draw (1-1).
Next meeting for the two clubs in the 2015-16 season for the semi-finals of the competition. After a poor 0-0 draw in England, Real advanced 1-0 thanks to Fernando’s own goal in the 20th minute.
The two teams met again in the knockout phase, this time for the “16” of the competition in the 2019-20 season. There, City subdued the Madrids after winning in Spain with 1-2 for the first match and winning in Manchester again with 2-1, leaving Benzema and his company out of action.
The most recent clash between the two clubs was last season (2021-22) again for the semi-finals of the Champions League. In a match at the Etihad, Manchester City set the stage for qualification with a score of 4-3. In fact, in the rematch, the “citizens” took the lead at 73 with Mahrez, with the match seemingly over. But thanks to Rodrigo’s two goals in two minutes, the match turned upside down and went to overtime. There, the great Karim Benzema spoke in 95, sending the Madrilenians to heaven and the final of the Champions League with a final score of 3-1.
Last match a week ago in Manchester with the goals of Vinicius and De Bruyne bringing the match to a draw and today’s (17/5) match to decide who will get the golden ticket for the final in Istanbul.
