Draymond Green: “The Nuggets beat the Lakers with the system… Spanoulis”!

by

To Vassilis Spanoulis mentioned the Draymond Green in the technical analysis he made for their victory Nuggets over Lakersin the first Western final, via his podcast.

Specifically, their forward Warriors he emphasized that the Denver team applied and performed very well the system named after ‘Kill Bill’ and has already been used for about a decade in the NBA.

The “Spanoulis” system introduced for the first time to the “magical world” o Quin Snyder in 2014 when he was a coach at Utah Jazz. The American coach was inspired by this system from the movement of Vassilis Spanoulis and how he took the ball from the top, to shoot from the perimeter.

In fact, Snyder had seen this play several times in practice, in the Final Four in London in 2013where the trophy ended up in Olympic. That season, the American was part of her coaching staff CSKA Moscow (eliminated by Olympiacos in the semi-final)as his assistant Ettore Messina. So, seeing the then guard of the “red and whites” and his current coach Pigeon bwin to make this specific move was inspired by the relevant system, which apparently other NBA teams are still applying!

Another system that the Nuggets ran is what we call “Spanoulis”. Spanoulis is a Greek international who played for 20 years in the Euroleague, was drafted by a team in Texas, either the Spurs or the Mavericks, ended up playing for the Rockets or something,” Draymond Green initially said in his analysis, then explained:

He is a legend in Greece, he was famous for the cut that you could come from the underside of the basket, you cut upwards and there is a big hole, usually at the height of the shooting line maybe a little higher, but right in the middle of the court . And as you come off the backboard, he takes the ball out of the tall man’s hands. You can imagine that the whole defense is down, so when you get the ball, you’re free. Jamal Murray did it three times, Caldwell-Pope three more times, Michael Porter did it as many times. So they are pretty good with the “Spanoulis move”».
