The Australian government on Friday canceled Novak Djokovic’s visa for the second time, saying the world’s number one tennis player, unvaccinated against Covid-19, could pose a risk to the community.
The decision raises the prospect of a second court battle for the Serb to stay and compete for his 21st tennis title at the Australian Open, which starts on Monday.
Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used discretionary powers to cancel Djokovic’s visa again after a court overturned an earlier revocation and released him from immigration detention on Monday.
“Today I exercised my power under the Migration Act to cancel Novak Djokovic’s visa on health and order grounds, based on the public interest,” Hawke said in a statement.
Under the section of the Migration Act that the minister used to exercise his power to cancel the visa, Djokovic could not enter Australia for three years, except in circumstances that affect the country’s interests.
Djokovic, the reigning Australian Open champion, was included in the draw on Thursday as the seed and is expected to face fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in his opening match.
