A group of wrestlers has been holding a sit-in since last month, demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh, president of the wrestling federation, who they accuse of sexual harassment and intimidation.
Today (26/5), the protesting wrestlers tried to march towards the new Parliament of India, the inauguration of which was done by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, but they were stopped by hundreds of policemen.
Among those arrested and bussed were Olympic bronze medalists Sakshi Malik and Bhairang Punia.
“We respect our athletes, but we will not tolerate any disruption of the inauguration of the parliament building,” a senior police official was quoted as saying by national television station NDTV.
At the same time, police officials guarded the city’s entrances when a group of farmers tried to enter the area to support the protesters.
It is noted that a few days ago, dozens of farmers violated the police checkpoints in the city to participate in the protest.
For his part, the head of the wrestling federation, who belongs to Mr Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, has denied the allegations against him.
