The global football community remains shocked by the tragic death of a 53-year-old River Plate fan falling from the upper deck in the match against Defensa.

The sad event it happened around the 15th minute of the match, but it was not immediately noticed by the referee, who, after being informed by the security officials of the stadium, but also by fans’ slogans asking for the game to be stopped, decided to end the match early in the 25th minute. In the first minutes the victim’s long hair led many to believe that it was a woman, but it was soon established that he was a man and identified as Pablo Serrano.

Eyewitnesses report that the audience in the stands was in a state of shock, as several of them saw the man fall into the void and be killed before their eyes. As it is emphasized in the first statements, there was no one near him who seemed to have pushed him, while the possibility of suicide. From some footage available to authorities, the 53-year-old first looks down the bleachers, looks behind him, and then leaps into the void, with indications to be rather clear that it was a suicide.

At first his lifeless body was covered by a large River Plate flagso that the public would not see the hideous sight, while the authorities then set up a makeshift structure so that they could carry out the investigations without being in public view.

The security of the stadium kept several of the fans who were at the same gate for statements, while they continue the investigations asking anyone who saw or happened to record something with a mobile phone to provide information. Of course, the footage from the closed circuit of “Monumental” is also being examined, in order to clarify the causes of the tragedy. “Monumental” was sealed off for investigationsbut it is expected to open its doors normally to host Fluminense in the early hours of Thursday (3:30) for the Copa Libertadores.

His daughter was in the field, but in another gate

A tragic detail is that the victim’s daughter was on the field. Not with him on the same port, but on a different one. In fact, initially she did not know that the man who was killed was her father and when she was informed, she collapsed. A few hours later she uploaded a picture with him with the words “I will love you forever, Dad». The president of River, Jorge Pablo Brito, was at her side from the first moment.

The victim had been a member of River Plate since 2022, but had been an ardent fan for years and had previously organized many trips to away games. In fact, on his Facebook page he had photos that he had taken with former stars of the team, such as with the former Olympiakos player, Javier Saviola. He lived in the town of Jaedo, a small suburb of Buenos Aires.
