Dominant in Canada too Max Verstappen!
The World Champion started from pole and did not lose the lead at any point in the race, celebrating his fourth consecutive victory and sixth overall in the 8 Grands Prix we have seen so far this season. At the same time, he gave Red Bull its 100th victory in Formula 1!
It was Alonso who prevailed in the battle with Hamilton for second place, with the two eventually taking the podium, while the two Ferraris appeared competitive and with the right strategy late on, finishing 4-5 (4th Leclerc, Saint 5th), although they started the race outside the top ten.
Russell sent his Mercedes into the wall on lap 12 and eventually retired with an overheating brake problem in 55th, while Perez, Albon, Ocon, Stroll and Bottas completed the top ten.
The race started with Hamilton passing Alonso in the first corner, taking him 2nd place, while Verstappen made a very good start, remaining in the lead. Russell also put pressure on Alonso, but the Spaniard managed to defend, trying to take back second place from Hamilton.
On lap 9 Sargent retired with his Williams having a mechanical problem, while on lap 12 Russell crashed his Mercedes into the wall at turn 9, eventually managing to stay in the race but dropping to last place. On lap 13, Hamilton and Alonso nearly collided in the pits after the Briton exited, with the marshals reviewing the incident and not issuing a penalty.
The safety car made its appearance, with Leclerc, Saint, Perez, Magnussen and Botan being the only ones not to pit for a tire change. Alonso increased his pressure on Hamilton and on lap 22 passed Hamilton with the help of DRS, taking back the position he lost at the start. Ferrari continued with the medium tire they started the race with, this strategy taking their drivers to 4-5, while Verstappen maintained a consistent gap of nearly 5” from 2nd placed Alonso.
The Ferraris entered the pits after lap 40, trailing only Verstappen, Alonso and Hamilton, while the world champion maintained his advantage over Aston Martin at levels above 5”. At the same time, Hamilton was increasingly reducing his gap with Alonso in the battle for 2nd place.
In the end, nothing changed in the final laps, with Verstappen comfortably taking the checkered flag first, while Alonso withstood Hamilton’s pressure to finish second. The Ferraris of Leclerc and Saint finished the race in 4th and 5th respectively, with the drivers renewing their appointment for the three-day 30/6-2/7 when they meet for the Austrian Grand Prix!
