Bartzokas: “How this year’s Olympiacos will be structured depends on Vezenkov”

In his thoughts on Olympiakos in the new season, he was mentioned George Bartzokas. The coach of the “red and white” referred to the special importance of his case Sasha Vezenkov and commented on his case Kostas Sloukasstressing, however, that Olympiacos is above faces.

“The first year I came after Christmas, the Euroleague was suspended due to the coronavirus. Something was not completed. The same in the second year, which was under special circumstances. I would say how it was a preliminary process because we were already adding players to our roster. We started to build our main core, in order to have a winning mentality in the coming years. The first year had no heartbreaks. Every year, it has its own. I remember the good and bad moments from all the seasons and not just the ones that end in titles”

For the final of the Euroleague which was decided in the last shot: “In sport at this level you don’t need a successful or a failed result to motivate you for the next one. It applies to everyone in the organization. We will go down with the same thirst every year, whether Micic and Yule missed the shot or scored it. Our year was very successful in the Euroleague. We had sensational performances. In sports you have to be prepared for everything.”

For the fact that even the opponents accept his skills as a coach: “I know the work I do and in which country I do it. I also know which group I represent and what feelings it evokes. Jealousy, excitement builds, and I’m prepared for whatever happens. I feel, I can say, a vindication, because I come from the Olympiakos family. I know that the relationship between Olympiakos fans and the respective coach is not easy, because most of them are also coaches in the stands, as is the case in all sports here in Greece. Olympiacos is getting more and more basketball fans, year after year. But you have to be prepared for all versions.”

For the possibility of Kostas Sloukas leaving: “We have just completed a successful year in Europe and Greece. Olympiacos is above the faces. We are all expendable. It has a model, it produces players, coaches and whoever comes to the team in the majority, improves and this leads the team to do what it does. If we should now say that Slukas was playing unhappy all year, I don’t know. All players want to play more, so does Kostas. This is always the process. Kostas had an amazing year, he had some injuries that limited him, but in the end he was very good. It was a very important piece of our puzzle.”

About Kanaan and the planning of Olympiakos for the new period: “Kanaan is not a player who has the ball in his hands a lot. He is an off screen player. He can get the ball and execute quickly. In Olympiakos, the level went up. Nobody plays 35 minutes or more in Europe, let alone in Olympiakos. Kanaan was an important part of our team. There are players who have a closed contract for the year, there are players who have an option from the team and today we met with the Presidents to draw up a strategy in terms of the renewals we have to do. It is important that how this year’s Olympiacos will be structured depends on Sasha (Vezenkov). There are the renewals of Papanikolaou and Slouka that we would very much like to see stay. But if Vezenkov leaves, it will create a new situation and maybe Olympiacos will have to change its form. We cannot make quick decisions. I’m not worried, we have a significant trunk. If you ask me, I would like to have the same team next year, with maybe just one addition of a player. At the end of the day, I think we’re an organization that a lot of players and coaches would like to work here.”
