Lionel Messi voted for Neymar as the best in the world

For Lionel Messi, the best player of 2021 was Neymar. As captain of his national team, the Argentine was entitled to one vote in FIFA’s election for the top player of the season. He chose, in order; Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema.

The electoral college of the entity that commands world football was made up of the captains and coaches of the national teams and a journalist from each country.

Neymar received three votes as the best in the world. Thiago Silva, captain of Brazil, and Selvaraj Vengadasalam, coach of the Laos national team, also chose him.

In the list of Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni, Neymar was third. Tite’s picks were Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah and Karim Benzema.

In an event held this Monday, the Polish Lewandowski won the award for the best in the world for the second year in a row. He beat competition from Messi and Salah, the other two finalists.

The last Brazilian to be chosen by FIFA was Kaka, in 2007. Since then, Neymar has been a finalist twice. It ranked third in 2015 and 2017.

Among the three finalists, Salah and Lewandowski, captains of Egypt and Poland respectively, voted for Jorginho, a Brazilian-born Italian midfielder, as the best of the season.

No athlete from Brazil was mentioned in the women’s election, won by Spain’s Alexia Putellas, from Barcelona. But she did not receive the votes of Pia Sundhage and Marta, respectively coach and captain of the national team.

For Marta, the best of the season was the Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius. Pia voted for Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema.
