Van Weert: “AEK wants us to continue together, there is interest from abroad”

The AEK striker spoke to the Dutch Media “voetbalzone” about many things. Tom Van Weert.

In a long interview that he gave, the 33-year-old forward talked about his future at AEK, stressing that there is interest from abroad in his acquisition, he spoke in the best words about Amrabad and Levi Garcia, while referring to his time in the Union , as well as in the atmosphere of the OPAP Arena.

About Amrabad: “Of course it’s always nice to speak the same language and have someone with a common background. Even if he wasn’t Dutch I would still enjoy it. I was very happy that he was here, we had a lot of laughs together. That’s why I think it’s a shame that he’ll probably leave, he was a good teammate. He is certainly highly regarded by clubs in the Netherlands. He may be 36, but he’s still in great shape. He is fast, strong and has a great image”.

For Levi Garcia: “He has had a great season and has scored a lot of goals. Levia changed position and now plays center forward. At Alkmaar he was still young, but here at AEK he was able to really develop. I think he’s ready to make a move. This position change worked well, but was a bit of a drawback. He started playing there as an emergency solution and eventually did so well that he was allowed to stay when I joined the club.”.

For his participation in AEK: “It was difficult because I had a different role than in Volos, because as a footballer you always want to play more. On the other hand, I missed a lot of games at an important stage of the season due to injury, so I know what the lack of time does. When you play on a team that’s on a run, it makes sense to the coach that he’s not just going to change. Fortunately I made an impression in the minutes I played, which is also reflected in my goal average. I’m sure I’ll be playing a lot more next season. That’s why I’m here, now we’re working hard to start the season in top form. We are entering the Champions League so it will be a great experience. I can’t wait to finally play in Europe”.

For the fiesta and atmosphere at OPAP Arena: “I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is really great and in our new stadium which is said to be one of the most atmospheric stadiums in Europe at the moment, it’s fantastic. From that point of view, it’s a pleasure every week to be able to play here. Around the championship game, 100,000 people attended the stadium, while it holds about 33,000 spectators. That says it all, of course.”.

For his future: “Because we will be playing in Europe, there are many games coming up. If I stay fit I will play more games than last season. I am looking forward to showing myself at the international level. We will start from the third qualifying round of the Champions League, so hopefully we can qualify. AEK wants to continue with me, which is always nice to know. There is some interest from abroad, but I don’t expect to make another transfer. I want to prove myself here for a full season first.”.

Regarding the possibility of his return to the Netherlands: “The Netherlands’ door is of course always open. Maybe not for next season, because I don’t plan that much, but I think it would be nice to go back to the Eredivisie. At the moment I live in a nice place and I am doing well at AEK. I can stay here for a while. On the other hand, things move quickly in football. If I have to play somewhere else, Holland is always an option.”.
