The Open European Optimist Championship, held at the facilities of the Thessaloniki Nautical Club, has been turned into a championship of twists and turns by the playful weather.
Iason Panagopoulos “read” the waters of Thermaikos gulf well and again leads the general ranking in the boys, setting a course for winning a medal.
The participants measured their strength in two sailing races, with the NO Kalamaki sailor dominating the first race and finishing second in the next.
Panagopoulos has a total of 8 penalty points and is getting closer to his goal of defending his title in the event.
The talented Greek sailor is followed by the Spanish Matteo Monte with 11 bp, while third is the Italian Jesper Carlsen with 14 bp.
The girls had a sailing race today and it was enough to have a change of scenery.
Maria Silvestri now leads the general classification race with 13 penalty points.
However, the Italian sailor feels the breath of the Ukrainian Olya Lubyanska, who is 14 bp behind. Third is the Italian Gaia Ginali with 16 b.p.
On the Greek side, the best placement is Despoina Theodorakopoulou, who gained two places in the ranking and from No. 12 is now in 9th place with 33 b.p.
