THE Latvia of the absentee Kristaps Porzingis announced its final dozen for the World Cup, making two final cuts.
One of them was Yannis Tima. His former player Olympiakou was injured and missed part of training, but had fully recovered and seemed to have secured a spot on the roster Luca Banki. However, he stayed out, expressing his displeasure via social media.
What he wrote in detail:
“This decision was definitely one of the most difficult ones made in my journey with the national team. All these years regardless of the situation, I felt honored to be in the team.
Speaking now of my condition, as people probably know, I injured my calf when we were at Lepaia. However, I can confidently say that I have fully recovered and am 100% healthy. There is no pain or limitation. Even if there was, I would be willing to play injured to represent Latvia with pride on the world stage. I am sure that I would help the team achieve important victories.
Unfortunately, I did not join the mission. And I still can’t figure out why I got cut. I guess I’ll never understand. During the summer I took part in various leagues to stay in good shape and be ready for the national. I was not injured and had no problem. I showed what I can do. But the decision is what it is.
Although I did not initially intend to address the issue, the constant messages and questions I received from journalists and from other people who appeared confused pushed me to the decision to present my side. My aim is that there should be no misunderstanding.
I want to thank the coaching staff, physios and trainers who did their best to keep me healthy and ready to compete.
In the next few weeks I will talk to teams in Europe and find the best decision for me. For now I will continue to work, be fit and 100% healthy for the new challenges ahead. I wish everyone the best. I’m with you, let’s go to Latvia.”
