The skier Bruna Moura, 27, summoned to represent Brazil at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games in the cross-country modality, suffered fractures in a car accident and will no longer be able to participate in the competition.

According to the COB (Olympic Committee of Brazil), the accident happened near Obervintl, Italy. The athlete was heading to Germany, after a period of training in Austria, and expected to embark in a few days to China. The opening ceremony of the Games will be on the 4th of February.

“Bruna suffered fractures in the ulna (forearm bone) and feet and is hospitalized. The COB and the Brazilian Snow Sports Confederation (CBDN) are providing full support to the athlete,” the committee said in a statement.

“I was sitting in the back seat and wearing a seat belt, the doctors said that’s what saved me. I’m not going to the Winter Olympics this time, but I’m alive,” the athlete told Globo.

The driver who drove her died in the accident, according to Italian media reports, and the athlete was transported by helicopter to hospital.

His participation was in doubt since last week. On the 17th, when she learned of the summons to Beijing, Bruna also received the positive diagnosis for Covid-19 and went into quarantine in Austria. The expectation is that the skier will recover by the end of this week and will be able to travel to China on the 1st.

She will be replaced by Eduarda Ribeira, third among the athletes who competed for the two spots in Brazil. Duda, 17, should leave for China this Friday (28) and compete alongside Jaqueline Mourão, 46. The veteran will participate in her eighth edition of the Olympic Games, her fifth in winter.
