Marinaki’s letter for Elite referees and A’ category in the upcoming derbies

by

A letter to the president of UEFA, Aleksandar Ceferin, as well as Theodoros Theodoridis (General Secretary of UEFA), Zoran Lakovic (Director of National Federations), requesting Elite referees or A’ class in the upcoming derbies was sent by Vangelis Marinakis.

Because, for next Sunday (17/9) the matches AEK-Olympiakos (21:30) and PAOK-Aris (20:30) have been set for the 4th matchday of the Stoiximan Super League.

It is recalled that he had recently responded Alexander Ceferin in the relevant letter from the EPO, stressing that it is unacceptable to threaten referees during their presence in Greek matches. However, he said that the relevant request of the Federation will be considered. With Vangelis Marinakis stating in today’s letter that: “As Super League, we would like to ensure the safety of foreign match referees during their stay in Greece. This will ensure that all match referees feel safe and accommodated accordingly».

At the same time, he had this letter ask Takis Baltakos from Vangelis Marinakis to send it to UEFA on 5/9.

The letter in detail

Dear Mr. President,

Thank you for your continued support of Greek football.

We refer to your letter dated 4/9/2023 to the EPO, which temporarily restricts UEFA elite and category 1 referees from officiating Super League 1 matches in Greece.

We would like to inform you that the Greek league started on August 18, 2023 and after this international break the fourth matchday will be held.

This weekend we will see crucial matches between the big clubs such as AEK – Olympiacos and PAOK – Aris.

As a Super League we ask for your input (unanimous decision of the Super League Board on 8/09/2023) to appoint UEFA elite and first division referees.

It is very important for the transparency and integrity of the matches between the big clubs, i.e. Panathinaikos, Olympiakos, AEK, PAOK and Aris, that foreign referees are appointed only from the top European leagues.

As Super League, we would like to ensure the safety of foreign match referees during their stay in Greece.

This will ensure that all match referees feel safe and accommodated accordingly.

On behalf of the Super League, we thank you for your cooperation in this matter and look forward to your positive response.

Greetings,

Evangelos Marinakis

Chairman

Super League 1 Greece
