Hougaz on sport-fm.gr: “I watched Spanoulis on TV in the Euroleague finals”

The new season finds the Pigeon bwin ready for new distinctions in Greece and Europe, after last year’s very good course he had in Basketball League with the third place and in the Greek Cup with the presence in the final of the competition, where he was defeated by Olympic.

The sport-fm.gr was at the Western Suburbs team’s Media Day and spoke to Niko Hugazwho appeared fully prepared for a good year with successes on a team and individual level.

The Greek forward referred to the goal that everyone has in order to take the step above in Europewhile he spoke in the best words about him Vasilis Spanoulisemphasizing that it is exciting to have him as a coach, as – as he commented – he used to watch him on TV as a child to excel in the Euroleague finals!

You are effectively entering the second season with Peristeri bwin. How is this first period after the friendlies and preparation?

“I think we have done a very good preparation, we have shown a very good face in all the friendlies and we have won most of them. There is a very good chemistry between us and for the time we have been together we have bonded very well».

Is Peristeri bwin ready to take the next step, especially in Europe after an admittedly very good year of Vassilis Spanoulis on the bench?

“There is a base, we have a lot of guys left from last year, whenever we know the coach’s philosophy. As we have seen in the first games, we have also passed it on to the new players who have come and we also want to build on the previous year, which was successful, mainly in Greece, while the goal is to step up in Europe and in general to have a worthy season again this year».

You are in the team coached by Vassilis Spanoulis, a man who wrote his name in golden letters in the history of European basketball. Describe to me what all this is like for you and in general the information is taken from him.

“It is really exciting to have Vassilis Spanoulis as a coach. I remember ten years ago when I saw him on TV playing in the Euroleague finals and now I have him as my coach, it’s a really incredible feeling. He clearly has a winning mentality and tries to pass that on to us any way he can.

Also what you see in racing is when a game doesn’t go well it has a way of motivating us to not give up and keep trying».

On an individual level, for your part, are you ready this season, are you stepping up? Your image against PAOK in the last game was impressive.

“I have worked a lot over the summer and it has been a very good preparation. It was just a game against PAOK, it was me on my day, in the next match it could be someone else. These performances come out of the team, the team play, one player cannot have a good match alone, his teammates are needed too. I’m ready to have a good year, but most of all it’s about being healthy».



What do you think of the level of this year’s Basketball League? Has the bar been raised between the teams?

“I think this year’s league will be much more competitive, the teams have been upgraded and as we can see there have been strong transfers. Panathinaikos has made very good moves, AEK has strengthened significantly, while several teams compete in Europe. We will have a very interesting and competitive championship».
