Eriksen signs with Brentford and returns to football eight months after cardiac arrest

by

Christian Eriksen, 29, is very close to resuming his career after about eight months away from the pitch. The Danish midfielder, who suffered a cardiac arrest in his team’s match against Finland, for the European Championship, in June 2021, was announced as a reinforcement for Brentford (ING).

Without a club since the end of his contract with Inter Milan (ITA), the athlete has signed an agreement until the end of the current season. In a video released by the English club, he says: “I can’t wait to start playing”.

Eriksen had his contract terminated by Inter after having implanted an internal cardioverter-defibrillator, capable of detecting arrhythmias and treating them through electrical stimuli. Equipment is banned in Italian football, and he had been keeping fit at the facilities of Ajax (HOL), the team that revealed it.

The midfielder was released from the doctors and chose to return to England, where he played from 2013 to 2020, wearing the Tottenham shirt. Brentford are currently 14th in the Premier League.

In addition to undergoing a cardiological evaluation, the player also completed the vaccination schedule against Covid-19 to be able to play in the United Kingdom.

“Brentford fans can rest assured that we have carried out a significant investigation to ensure Christian is in the best possible shape to return to competitive football,” said the club’s director of football, Phil Giles. “It’s fantastic that he’s with us now.”

The Dane, who claimed to have died “for five minutes” in the game against Finland, on June 12 of last year, before the doctors were able to revive him, said recently that he was already feeling fit and motivated, even to compete in the World Cup in Qatar.

“I want play [na Copa]. It’s a goal, it’s a dream,” he said.
