While participating in the BBB (Big Brother Brazil), sprinter Paulo André, 23, receives incentives from the federal government. Confined in the house where the reality show on TV Globo is held, he is not training or competing, but he continues to have funds such as the Bolsa Atleta program.

One of the main hopes of Brazilian athletics in an attempt to complete the 100 m race in less than ten seconds, the São Paulo rider is also contemplated by initiatives from the government of Espírito Santo — he is a resident of Vila Velha.

Paulo André is still a third sergeant in the Navy. He receives salary as part of the Armed Forces program for high-performance athletes.

He earns R$1,850 per month through the federal Atleta Scholarship, a program designed to give athletes “minimum conditions for them to dedicate themselves, with exclusivity and tranquility, to training and competitions”. From the Bolsa Atleta Capixaba program, there is another R$ 2,000. The pay for the patent he holds in the Navy is R$ 4,700 per month.

The BBB also receives R$ 1,650 per month for being part of the permanent selection of the Brazilian Athletics Confederation (CBAt). The confederation also offers assistance with accommodation, transport, food and health insurance.

The selection is updated every six months, the duration of the incentive. The CBAt stated that the next review is scheduled for February and that the criterion is the score in the world ranking. Paulo André could lose his place as he is out of competition.

Also because he is isolated, he will be out of the teams that the confederation will take to the South American Indoor Championships in Athletics, which will take place on February 19 and 20, in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

If he remains on the reality show until its end, in April, and does not lose the aid, the athlete will receive about R$ 30 thousand in three months. Without any contact with your trainer.

Sought after, Paulo André’s businessman, Basílio Emídio, said that it was never in the plans to participate in the disputes on the indoor track in the first half of the year. According to the agent, “this was already decided before the proposal to go to the program”, and there are competitions planned for the second semester.

“All the benefits that athlete Paulo André Camilo de Oliveira receives are due to the results achieved in the 2021 season. […] The athlete did not abandon his athletic career on the tracks. just saw [o BBB] as a unique opportunity to grow its image”, said Emídio.

When questioned, the Espírito Santo Sports Department reported that “it is evaluating what measures will be taken in the face of the situation”. The Department of Sport of the federal government stated that “it will define the situation of the payment of the Bolsa Atleta after legal analysis of the case”, but did not give a deadline for this.

The Navy said it expected a response from the subsidy sector and did not respond again. Nike, a supporter of the athlete, responded that it does not comment on sponsorship contracts.

The sprinter is in the “international” category of the Bolsa Atleta federal. He was even selected for the “podium” category, which pays R$ 8,000 per month, but did not deliver the necessary documentation to be contemplated.

According to his manager, it was a choice. According to Emídio, the duration of the “international” benefit was 12 months, ten more than that provided for in the “podium” category. Thus, at the tip of the pencil, the option was made for the most lasting benefit.

The announcement that Paulo André would participate in the reality show on TV Globo took CBAt, COB (Brazilian Olympic Committee) and Marinha by surprise. None of the entities was previously notified of the decision.

At BBB, the capixaba is out of the world athletics indoor season, which takes place during the northern hemisphere winter, and misses months of training. On the other hand, he gains visibility and the possibility of exploiting his image, something that can earn him more money than sports awards.

He already has 2.3 million followers on Instagram. Last week, he was quoted by the singer Anitta, who recommended to the participant Jade to invest romantically in the sportsman: “If I don’t get this bofe, I’m going to invade the house and steal it for myself”.

Before joining BBB, Paulo André was already a model. And he tried to balance that career with work on the slopes.

The start as a sprinter was very promising, and he even completed the 100m race in 9s90, in 2019 – the mark was not homologated as the South American record because the wind was in his favor and over the limit. His best recorded performance is 10s02.

At the Tokyo Olympics, however, he was far from that. He stopped in the semifinal heats, with 10s31, and was in 23rd place. Emotional, he claimed to have made mistakes and promised to work to improve. As far as we know, competing in the Paris Olympics in 2024 is in his plans.

Paulo André has on his resume the title of the Pan-Americano de Lima, in 2019, in the 4 x 100 m relay. In the same year, he established with Brazil the South American record of this event. In the individual dispute in Peru, he took the silver medal.
