Who is Nasos Gavelas?
THE Nassos Gavelas was born on December 19, 1999 and always dreamed of becoming a successful athlete. From a very young age he showed his inclination towards sports by trying many sports, but athletics was the sport that won his heart. Around the age of ten, his genetic disease appeared Stargardt, which gradually caused his vision to decline. Despite the significant challenges faced by a visually impaired athlete, he managed to win the gold medal at the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
In 2017 he participated in the first major event, the World Championships in Athletics for the Disabled in London, where he took 10th and 14th place in the 100m and 200m. respectively, of the T12 category, with times of 11.39” and 23.26”. A year later he competed in the European Championships in Berlin, where he won Gold 100m medal (T12) with a performance of 11.47” and became the youngest athlete to be named European Champion in his category. In the same event, he also won the silver medal in the 200m. with a time of 23.20”. This was followed by his participation in the 2019 Dubai World Championships, where he finished eighth in the 100m. and then switched to the T11 category, where he participated in races with a driver.
In June 2021 he won the gold medal in European Championship in Bydgosz and at the same time noted new Pan-European 100m record (10.98”). A few months later he won the gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, setting a new world record (10.82”) in the 100m. in category T11.
