THE Panathinaikos came away with the victory from SEF (54-66) in the derby of the 4th game of the Stoiximan Basket League, ending the 42-game and almost two-year undefeated streak of Olympiakos for the regular season. Many notable performances emerged from this derby.
The “greens” who counted five straight defeats in SEF for the Championship, recorded their 22nd double in the years of the professional Championship, the 6th with a double-digit difference and with the fourth longest away victory. This list is as follows:
2007-08 (Regular Season): +18 (64-82)
2016-17 (Finals): +15 (51-66)
2012-13 (Finals): +13 (51-64)
2023-24 (Regular Season): +12 (54-66)
2005-06 (Finals): +11 (68-79)
2001-02 (Regular Season): +10 (52-62)
The derby was low-scoring and the 120 points of the two teams ranks it 8th of those that took place in the SEF for the regular season. The lowest performance was that of the game of the 2013-14 season when it was decided with a total productivity of 100 points (55-45). At the same time, this is the lowest performance this year since the previous one was the one of 130 points scored in the matches Peristeri bwin-Panathinaikos (64-66) and Aris Midea-Karditsa Iaponiki (69-61).
Panathinaikos reached the predominance through some remarkable performances in the fields of “economy”.
*The game had few mistakes, with Panathinaikos making the fewest. He had eight and scored the third best performance of the year after doing more than only Prometheus with Marousi (5) and PAOK mateco (6).
*Ergin Ataman’s team made 11 steals and scored the second highest performance of the year. She also holds the top score, after she had 13 in her game with Maroussi.
*At the same time, the seven cuts by Panathinaikos constitute a new record for this year’s Stoiximan Basket League since the previous one was the six made by AEK Betsson on the same field.
*Thus the “greens” also set a season record in the defensive steals/interceptions ratio. They had +18 and surpassed Prometheus’ +16 in the premiere against PAOK mateco (11 steals + 5 cuts).
*Panathinaikos rallied to win by overturning a nine-point deficit (27-18 at 16:31) and that’s tied for the third-highest margin of the season. It is the team that has the biggest one as it had a 19-point game against Peristeri bwin.
Mitoglou in a triple achievement with cuts
Dinos Mitoglou was the leader of Panathinaikos finishing the game with a double-double and 26 in the ranking. Not only that, but…
*With his four blocks, the international forward tied his Stoiximan Basket League career high. It is a performance he had also achieved in the away game against Peristeri bwin in the 2019-20 season.
*With these four cuts he made yesterday, he moved up one place in the historical list of Panathinaikos blockers, in the years of the professional Championship. He reached 66 and is now 12th after surpassing Patrick Burke who had 64 in the three years 1998-2001.
*At the same time, Mitoglou’s four caps are also a new season record. He surpassed the three made by Jaime Etsenike of Prometheus in the premiere and Yiannis Kouseloglou of AEK Betsson last Saturday.
*With his two accurate three-pointers, Mitoglou entered the top 40 of the relevant, “green” list. He tied for 40th on both Byron Scott and Paris Lee’s 58 three-pointers.
*The Thessaloniki forward became the first Panathinaikos player in this year’s Championship to reach a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. It was the fourth “20+ points and 10+ rebounds” performance of the year following those of Sakur Juston in Game 1, Luka Brajkovic in Game 2 and Jaime Etzenike last Saturday.
Even on an individual level…
*Matias Lessor posted the second-highest rebounding performance among players who remained without a foul. The Frenchman had 11 rebounds and is behind only Luka Brajkovic who had two of 13 rebounds in Colossus H Hotels’ road games with Lavrio Megabolt and Apollon Carna and combined that performance with zero fouls.
Eight of Lesor’s 11 rebounds were on defense, tying this year’s record. It is a performance that was recorded a total of eight times in the first four matches, five of them during the past three days.
*This was the first time this year that two players on the same team reached double figures in rebounding.
*Kostas Sloukas experienced for the first time the “eternal” derby from the “green” side, in terms of the Championship and despite having the highest “+/-” coefficient with +18, he became the fourth in the season to have 0/6 or more three-pointers. The same performance (0/6 three-pointers) was achieved by Kyle Guy in the premiere with Marousi, while the negative record is shared by Jordan McRae of AEK Betsson (with Olympiakos out) and Andrew Harrison of PAOK mateco (with Lavrios Megabolt), having both 0/7 three-pointers.
In the previous two years, after returning to the Stoiximan Basket League, Kostas Sloukas had 0/5 three-pointers twice. In the corresponding game of the 2021-22 season (Olympiakos-Panathinaikos 76-81) and in the 2nd quarter-final of last year’s playoffs (Aris-Olympiakos 58-82).
