Her third straight(!) qualification to Euro celebrates the Hungary! In an episodic game, on and off the pitch, since, we remember, we had chaos in the streets of Sofia due to the fact that the match was played behind closed doors for security reasons, Bulgaria, with great protagonist Despodovit seemed that he would postpone the qualification of the Magyars, Petkov’s own goal in the 97th minute, however, sent them from tonight to Germany!
Although indifferent, disappointed and with many internal problems, since they have long been excluded and last in the group, the Bulgarians “hit” the game in full and in fact, they were not daunted by the Hungarians’ lead in the 10th minute with Adam (with a header after a free-kick by Soboslay) nor by the fact that they stayed with less player in the 37th minute due to the expulsion of the stopper Andof. Earlier, in the 24th minute, Delev had equalized the match assist of the leader of Bulgaria, Despontov.
In the second 45 minutes and specifically in the 57′, the balance was restored, after Kerkez was sent off on the Hungarian side and Bulgaria believed in total upheaval and in her first-honorary victory in the group! In the 82nd minute, it seemed that they were touching her, when Despodov made an excellent effort and won a penalty from view of Salai. The PAOK footballer took over the execution and was not mistaken about it 2-1! The last conversation, however, belonged to the Magyars, although the goal was scored by a Bulgarian! In the last, literally, phase of the match, in the 97th minute, Petkov sent the ball into his team’s net after a foul by Somboslai and Hungary in the Euro!
The surprising thing, as we mentioned above, is that Hungary was absent for 44 years from the finals of the European Championship and now has three consecutive appearances! Rossi’s team will compete in Germany in 2024 for the fifth time in the finals, with Bulgaria missing out for a fifth consecutive tournament (last appearance in 2004). It is worth noting that Serbia may later pass – without playing – as wellif Montenegro does not beat Lithuania.
* Bulgaria’s Iliev stayed on the bench Kifissia.
