Greece’s participation in the German table tennis Feeder ended with disqualifications

by

On Tuesday, the international table tennis players “chased” the goal of the main boards in three events, but given the high degree of difficulty, they did not achieve anything substantial. In the men’s singles, Yannis Sgouropoulos was defeated in the third qualifying round after an inconclusive match with the Englishman Samuel Walker.

In the mixed doubles, the four-time European junior singles champion and Malamatenia Papadimitriou scored a victory and were eliminated by an Asian duo in the decisive match for the qualification.

And in the women’s doubles, Papadimitriou and Dimitra-Thomais Tsekoura lost in the only qualifying round. We remind you that Elisabeth Terpou also took part in the German Feeder, playing only in singles.

In the men’s singles, Sgouropoulos had advanced two rounds on the qualifying board and on Tuesday was looking to reach the deciding match to advance to the first round of the event. Samuel Walker’s (No. 202) hurdle, however, which he should have cleared at noon, proved too high. Seven years after their two encounters in the European Championship qualifiers, the two met again in Dusseldorf and the Englishman won 3-1 sets.

Sgouropoulos had good opportunities to win at least one of the first two sets and did not take advantage of them. In the first set he led 6-3 and then took only one point and in the second 6-4 and conceded five points in a row. With his own reversal and, after saving consecutive match points, he managed to reduce in overtime to finally “bend” with a marginal difference in the fourth set and be eliminated in the qualifying round of “32” (7-11, 8-11, 17 -15, 9-11).

The games of the Greek colors started in the morning with the qualifiers in the mixed doubles (“16” board). The duo of Sgouropoulos/Papadimitriou had the first say against Daniels Kogans/Ho Ying (Latvia/Malaysia) and took the victory with 3-1 sets (11-6, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8).

In the decisive second qualifying round he faced Ho Kwan Kit/Lam Ye Lok, who were number 2 in that particular board. Our champions could not make it difficult for the Asians and were eliminated with 3-0 sets (5-11, 4-11, 9-11).

At noon, Tsekoura and Papadimitriou also made their attempt in the only qualifying round of the women’s doubles. They met Amelie Solja/Vivien Solz (Austria/Luxembourg) in a match with particularities, as there were combina-rubbers (“teeth”) on both sides (with Tsekura from Greece) and finally our pair was the one , which found no exits. He lost 3-1 sets and was off the board (4-11, 6-11, 11-3, 4-11).

* For the ranking list of the week announced on Tuesday by the World Federation, Katerina Toliou and Malamatenia Papadimitriou came from action in an evaluated event. Toliu got 16 points with their placement in the 17-32 positions of the Portuguese Feeder, but they already lost the 16 they had since last year with a similar placement in the tournament in Germany. Thus, he finally fell three places and is number 221 with 51 points (out of 218).

Papadimitriou, who was eliminated in the qualifiers of the Portuguese Feeder, added 2 points to her credit and rose seven places. It’s at number 381 from last week’s 388.
