EPO: “We support the referees – The government should take measures to reveal the persons behind the threats”

An announcement informing about what was discussed at today’s meeting, which was held on the occasion of the threats against the life of Tasos Papapetrou and his family, but also because of the abstention decided by the referees, was issued by EPO.

The football federation emphasizes that it fully supports the referees and understands the reasons that led them to abstain.

Yes, the EPO asks the government to take the necessary measures and identify those behind the threats, while also asking the League to guarantee the safety of the referees.

The announcement in detail

The initial meeting of the president of the Hellenic Football Federation, Mr. Panagiotis Baltakou, was held today with members of the KED/EPO and a delegation of international referees and assistants, who participated via telephone conference due to the absence of most outside Athens. The deputy president Mr. Panagiotis Dimitriou was also present at the meeting.

After what was discussed, from the EPO point of view, it is emphasized that the Federation fully supports the referees in their decision to abstain and fully understands the reasons that led them to this decision.

The EPO calls on the government and the competent Ministry of Citizen Protection to take the appropriate measures and reveal the persons behind the “anonymous” threats against the referees.

The EPO also calls on Super League 1 to provide guarantees of protection to Greek referees, just as it has done with foreigners.

The measures that EPO itself will take to protect the referees will be announced after a meeting that will take place on Friday 8/12 at 12:00 with the active participation of a delegation of referees.
